Exploring Khac Viet’s Handcrafted Materials
Water Hyacinth
Water hyacinth is a fast-growing aquatic plant native to tropical and subtropical regions, including South America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. This plant is characterized by its broad, glossy leaves, feathery purple-black roots, and striking lavender to pink flowers. Known for its rapid growth, water hyacinth reproduces through stolons and seeds, doubling in size every one to two weeks.
Due to its abundance, water hyacinth harvesting helps with environmental management, controlling overgrowth in water bodies. The stems are commonly used in handicrafts, such as baskets, furniture, bags, hats, wreaths, and more. Known for its durability, natural color, and eco-friendly qualities, water hyacinth is one of the most popular materials in home décor and handicrafts.
Seagrass
Seagrasses, often referred to as “sedges” in Vietnam, are grass-like plants that thrive in coastal areas and marshes. Although the name suggests they grow underwater, seagrasses used for handicrafts are cultivated above ground, swaying in the wind like ocean waves. Vietnam’s coastal provinces are known for their seagrass cultivation.
Seagrass is prized for its eco-friendly nature, durability, and versatility. Its natural aesthetic and range of colors and styles make it a favored material for creating attractive and sustainable handicraft products. Seagrass items, including baskets, mats, and furniture, have a strong presence in international markets.
Acacia Wood
Acacia, a versatile genus from the Fabaceae family, is native to regions across Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Known for its rapid growth and resilience, acacia thrives in a variety of climates, offering exceptional durability and strength, making it an excellent material for high-quality furniture.
Stronger and more resistant to warping than many hardwoods, including European white oak and hickory, acacia wood maintains stability over time. It is also flexible when freshly cut, allowing for detailed craftsmanship, and becomes even more durable as it cures.
With its rich, dark brown heartwood and unique grain patterns, acacia wood adds refined elegance to modern and minimalist designs, making it the perfect choice for creating both functional and aesthetically sophisticated furniture.
Pinewood
Pinewood comes from coniferous trees in the Pinus genus, part of the Pinaceae family. Grown in temperate regions around the world, including North America, Europe, New Zealand, and parts of Asia, pinewood is highly valued in Vietnam for its excellent workability and sustainable qualities.
With its pale yellow color and straight grain, pinewood is easy to shape and finish, making it ideal for both traditional and modern furniture designs. Although softer than hardwoods, it is strong, resistant to cracking, and stable over time. Its natural knots and grain patterns add unique character to each piece.
The fast-growing nature of pine trees makes pinewood an eco-friendly and sustainable choice for responsible furniture production.
